Senator Murray's representative visits campus

On Apr. 17, Deb Casey and the Outreach and Service Learning team hosted Nataly Morales, representing U.S. Senator Patty Murray's office, on a campus tour. Visiting the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Veteran Services she heard first-hand student testimony about how these services are supporting their persistence in completing their education. Morales shared her experiences as a student and the difficulties of applying for college while simultaneously going through the naturalization process. Her citizenship status when she was a student made her ineligible for support services such as financial aid and scholarships. Remarking on how impressed she was with the peer and staff support provided through ODEI's Peer Navigator program she noted that such programs would have been a great asset to her school experience.

Morales also toured Automotive, Welding, Machining & Manufacturing, and Information Technology. While touring Welding Technology she saw students in action preparing projects for the College's 50 year anniversary celebrations starting in fall of 2015. During her tour with the Information Technology Bachelors of Applied Science program she toured the server room with faculty member Alan Carter as he shared the programs commitment to an educated workforce that meets increasing employment demands for IT.

Morales will return to Green River during events related to the College's 50 year anniversary and new building openings in 2015-16, and learn more about the excellent programs offered by the College.
