AUBURN, WA - Green River Community College students Xintong Sara Li and Kevin Hartoyo have been named to the 2014 All-Washington Academic Team, a distinction that recognizes students for their academic excellence and community service. The students were honored at a March 27 ceremony at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia.

Sara, an International Studies student with a 3.94 GPA understands the power of knowledge. Raised by her single mother, Sara learned at an early age responsibility, self-reliance and independence. Her mother taught her to not let fear of failure be a barrier to achieving her goals. With that as her guide, Sara plans to earn a Ph.D. and work in nongovernmental organizations with the goal to work for the United Nations to advance human rights.

Kevin's experiences growing up in Jakarta, Indonesia, motivates him to achieve his goal of becoming a bioengineer. Working alongside his mother, a doctor, and seeing firsthand the effects of cancer, drives Kevin's desire to develop a cure for cancer. He volunteers as a mentor, tutor and peer volunteer to help students learn English, help others find resources, and supports international students as they learn a new country and American culture, all while maintaining a 3.87 GPA.

Each of the 34 Washington state community and technical colleges nominated students to the All-Washington Academic team. This year, 68 students were named to the team by their colleges. Each team member earned a $500 scholarship from KeyBank and a $250 scholarship from the Washington State Employees Credit Union. The students are also nominated to the All-USA Community and Junior College Academic Team.
