Baseball splits must win weekend with Centralia
With the new playoff format in NWAC Baseball, each division now has four teams advancing to the postseason. The Gators, who owned a 3-14 record going into the weekend, still had a chance at the postseason. They would be take on Centralia, who owned a 4-12 record going into the weekend, in a four game showdown for the battle for fourth place.
The games had a playoff atmosphere as each team knew any flutter or collapse could mean the end of the season for them. The two teams would trade-off games one and two on both Saturday and Sunday to split the four game series. Centralia owns the tie-breaker over the Gators having won the single game and taking the season series 3-2.
Travis Blough turned in perhaps his best outing of the year in game four when the Gators needed him most. He went six innings allowing just three runs on five hits and striking out six. He had cruised through six innings before allowing two home runs in the top of the 7th to make the game interesting. Matt Seeley came on to record the final two outs of the game for the save. Josh Broom went 7 for 14 on the weekend with 2 RBI, Rob Ackerley drove in 6 runs on the weekend, and Alex Poltz went 5 for 14 with 2 doubles on the weekend.
The Gators will close out the regular season this weekend against Grays Harbor. They do not control their own destiny and will need to take care of business as well as asking for some help from Pierce to get some wins over Centralia. They are playing Friday at Grays Harbor and then will be finishing the series Sunday at Heritage Park. Game times are 1:00 and 4:00 p.m.
