October 1964: Green River digs deep
As this article that originally ran in the Auburn Globe in October 1964 describes, ''Ground was broken this morning atop Lea Hill to signal the birth and beginning of work on the long-awaited Green River Community College. First to be constructed is a $501,992 unit for student classes slated to begin in the fall of 1965."
The article continues, describing the appointment of key leaders to the college: ''Dr. Melvin Lindbloom was named president of Green River Community College at an Auburn School District board meeting on Monday night . . . Ray Needham was appointed dean of instruction . . . Needham had been serving as assistant for vocational and adult education before his appointment to the dean's position."
