Participatory Governance Update
A critical piece of participatory governance at Green River College is establishing constituent councils for the classified and exempt staff. While a steering committee continues to work on operational issues around the board of trustee's participatory governance policy, throughout summer and fall quarters the classified and exempt staff have been meeting regularly to work on developing their constituent councils.
The classified staff has divided the campus into nine geographical areas and selected representatives: 1) AD and HR - Crystal Bolt; 2) Branch Campuses - Pam Dally; 3) Facilities - Pie-Yon Gilge; Green Group (Green buildings on campus map) SC, TC, CH, and WT - Yvonne Huang; 5) HL IT - Kathi Anderson; 6) International Village - Mary Butcher; 7) Lindbloom/TI/SS - Annalee Dunn; 8) RLC/SH - Julie Spiers; and, 9) Student Life - Susan Evans.
The representatives of the classified staff will have their first council meeting on Jan. 8 to work on the purpose and scope of their council, create bylaws, and elect two representatives and an alternate to serve on the college council. A big thank you goes to Jean Sheadel from the Participatory Governance Steering Committee for guiding the efforts on the development of the Classified Staff Council.
The exempt staff formed a bylaw sub-committee this fall and has developed a recommendation of bylaws to bring to the exempt staff for a vote. The exempt staff will be meeting on Friday, Jan. 16 (time and location TBD) to vote on their bylaws and nominate people for exempt council positions.
Thank you to Paul Mueller, Catherine Ushka, Patty Sikora, members of the bylaw sub-committee and to all exempt staff who contributed their thoughts, words and actions to create the Exempt Council thus far.
Be watching for more updates on participatory governance this month in the Communigator.
