Women’s basketball opens Kickner era with two victories
Meet the 2014-15 Women`s Basketball team.
The Women's Basketball team traveled to Portland, Ore., for two games against Mt. Hood Community College and Southwestern Oregon Community College and came home with two victories.
On Friday, the Gators took on the Southwestern Oregon Lakers defeating them 74-71. The Gators big first half was enough to hold off the Lakers as they outscored them 43-27. Gina Mitchell (Lake City High School) led all scorers with 24 points and recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds. Freshman Nicole Qualls (Sumner High School) was close behind with 21. The Gators out-rebounded Southwestern 49 to 42. Jordan Speelmon led the Gators in assists with 7.
The Gators then took on Mt. Hood on Saturday and came away with a hard fought victory scoring 61-57. After ending the first half with a 2-point lead over the Saints, the Gators fell behind in the second half by 15 points. The Gators overcame some early season adversity and chipped away at that lead little by little, and eventually took the lead for good.
Jessica Norlander (Timberlake High School) was the leading scorer with 19 points. The Gators had three starters in double-digit points; Jordan Speelmon (Sandpoint High School) with 11 and Kendra Trummert (Eatonville High School) was the other with 10. Jessica Norlander also led the Gators with 8 rebounds.
The Gators have their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 5 p.m. at The Swamp against Northwest Indian College. The Men will tip off right after at 7 p.m. against Edmonds Community College.
