Women’s Volleyball; Pulls the Upset and Gets Upset

Green River Volleyball hosted the Tacoma Titans who are ranked fourth in the Alaska Airlines NWAC Coaches Poll on Wednesday. The Gators were not intimidated as they pulled the upset in a five game thriller by set scores of 25-19, 25-20, 16-25, 12-25, and 15-12.

The Gators took the first two sets looking to sweep the Titans but the Titans came back from intermission motivated and handled the Gators in sets three and four. The Gators regrouped and rallied to win set five and taking the match to improve to 3-0 in league play while handing the Titans their first league loss and only their second loss of the entire season.

Rochelle Middlebrooks stayed hot as she lead the attack with 18 kills and a .371 hitting percentage. Maelynn Lautalo and Faith Faamausili each had 15 kills and added to an impressive attack by the Gators. Audra Koke had 27 assists and Carly Manning had 25 assists combining for 52 assists together. Audra Koke lead the defense as well with 14 digs, Maelynn Lautalo had 12 digs and Libero Dana Alderson had 10 assists as well.

On Friday, the 0-3 Centralia Trailblazers came into The Swamp looking to knock off the unbeaten Gators and that's just what they did. The Gators dominated sets one and two but the Blazers would rally to win 3 sets in a row to win 3-2 (10-25, 12-25, 25-23, 27-25, and 15-13).

Rochelle Middlebrooks with 17 kills, Deidreanna Laban with 14 kills, and Maelynn Lautalo and Faith Faamausili had 10 each. Audra Koke had 34 assists and Carly Manning added 17. Maelynn Lautalo led the defense with 22 digs and Dana Alderson added 18 of her own.

The Gators drop to 3-1 on the season and are in a four way tie for 1st place. They will host Pierce College, who is also 3-1, on Wednesday October 8 at 7pm.
