The Current, Green River's student newspaper, won five first-place awards in April and was again named one of the best community college papers in Washington.

Student journalists from across the state compete for the annual Washington Community College Journalism Association awards. For the second year in a row, The Current received third place in the general excellence category.

Dominic Yoxtheimer, a Green River student from Pacific and the newspaper's editor-in-chief, racked up first-place awards in five different categories. Yoxtheimer took over The Current newsroom last fall after serving as photography editor.

WCCJA has recognized The Current every year since 2008. This year marks the first time a staff member has topped the individual sweeps category for the most individual wins by a single student.

"The newspaper exists to provide a transparent view of the college, from its students to its faculty and administration," Yoxtheimer said. "What we strive to do is open all the doors."

The Current is actively recruiting new staff members for fall quarter. Students interested in reporting, writing, photography, design, new media and current affairs are encouraged to get involved. Students should consider enrolling in the News Laboratory course (JOURN 100.1) for three or five activity credits. All students are welcome to contribute stories, photos or ideas by contacting Yoxtheimer (editor@thegrcurrent.com) or newspaper adviser Brian Schraum (bschraum@greenriver.edu).

Students develop a range of skills, including clear, concise writing, one-on-one interviewing and the imperative of meeting deadlines.

"You have to get it done," Yoxtheimer said. "There is no not getting it done."
